It has been a few years since any real attention has been paid to import album sales in the US, however, Amy Winehouse’s 2003 debut release, “Frank,” is causing Universal to send letters threatening to sue local retailers if they continue to sell the imported album.
Retailers argue that they are just giving people what they want, and that if Universal wants to stop the spread of the 4 year old album that they should target P2P download sites.
Universal does not want the imported albums to cut into the projected sale of “Frank” when it is released in America in November.
Universal believes that “Frank” has sold some 18,000 imported copies in the US and since Back to Black is just shy of it’s 1.5-2 million copy goal, they want to hold off on introducing any new music for a while.
